Update 1/3/2023
505 Games responded to users on Twitter that they are aware of the problems and are looking into it.
Update 12/30/2022
The Director’s Cut edition of Death Stranding seems to be working fine, as some users reported that after upgrading their base game they were able to connect, the reason for this is that there are less DC players than base game players. There are 2 different servers for each version as the DC version offers more online content, which requires a separate server to serve this kind of content. If you really like Death Stranding, you can upgrade for just 5 bucks.
Just a few days ago Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding was a freebie surprise in the Epic Game Store, getting thousands of people excited to grab it and it also started crashing Epic’s servers not long after it got published. Besides the accidental release of the Director’s Cut Edition for free, the problems won’t disappear.
Servers Are Down
Since yesterday (12/28/2022) the Death Stranding servers are having quite a lot of issues, at around noon players started reporting the continued disconnection of the Online Service, which is an essential feature in Death Stranding, as it is used to make the world of Death Stranding more alive, more easily traveled and helps with certain difficulties such as mountains, BT’s or MULE’s.
Later that day the connection disappeard completely, preventing people from login in at all. A mess of continued connecting, disconnecting, connecting, disconnecting. The reasons for that are unclear.
Server Error Code 51003
This is the error the majority of players are seeing when disconnected from the servers, but what does it mean exactly?
Sadly, this isn’t one of those error codes that can be fixed with a slick trick or way around, as it means that the servers are overlaoded, which is probably because of the mass of players swarming into the game in the holiday time.
All Platforms Are Affected
While some users spread rumors that only the free version of Epic Store’s Death Stranding is affected, users from all platforms, including Steam and Playstation reported that they are also facing the same issue. It seems that the servers of Death Stranding are simply struggling with the mass of users.
There has yet to be a statement from Kojima Productions.
